North Lanarkshire Heritage Centre is a Visit Scotland four star attraction. Parking, disabled access, shop, gallery, tower, archives and local studies and garden are available. Packed lunch space is also available on request.

We have a wide range of Curriculum for Excellence based workshops for primary and early years.

WASH DAY

Early level / Pre-5s £25 / 45 mins

With soap suds and washing boards, scrubbing and cleaning, learn about traditional wash days. Complete with clothes, washing rhymes, a story and some soapy water play. SOC 0-01a

COLOUR TIME

Come and have fun with colour in a workshop. Learn about colours through activities, painting and story time. EXA 0-02a

WHEN GRAN WAS A GIRL

Find out how people lived and shopped in the 1950s. Pupils will learn about different shops, housework, handle a variety of domestic objects and investigate the similarities and differences between life now and then. SOC 1-04a

MY LOCAL AREA (MOTHERWELL)

By investigating with maps, photos and documents, pupils will learn about their local area in present day and in the past. Find out how Motherwell got its name, why the town expanded and learn about some of the town’s historical landmarks. SOC 1-02a / SOC 2-02a

 

WHAT’S IN THE ARCHIVES?

Discover the secrets of an archive; learn about why documents are kept; who makes the decisions and how to care for the past. Pupils will take a tour of the archive repository and take on the role of an archivist to research real life stories of Lanarkshire’s past. SOC 1-03a /SOC 2-01a

 

THE ROMANS

Discover more about the Romans in Scotland. Learn about the food they ate, the clothes they wore and the impact of the Roman army on Lanarkshire. Pupils will also have the opportunity to handle full size replica armour and domestic objects and even try on a toga! SOC 2-03a

 

STEM: ROCKET SCIENCE / AVAILABLE TO BOOK FROM JAN 2023
First/Second Level P3-6 / £44 / 90 mins

Bring your class along to discover more about the space race and related scientific developments. Get hands-on with some space inspired inventions, and take part in some rocket themed STEM challenges! Pupils will increase their knowledge and understanding of space and the universe, as well as discovering
how forces can change the direction, shape or speed of a rocket.

THE VICTORIANS

What impact did the Industrial Revolution have on Lanarkshire? Using photos, objects and documents from the Victorian period pupils will investigate the coal and iron industries and learn about everyday Victorian life at home, work and school. SOC 2-03a

SCOTTISH KNIGHTS AND CASTLES

Discover more about medieval Lanarkshire. Pupils will learn about the role of the castle, medieval food and banquets, discuss what a knight did and enjoy some hands on fun with full

WORLD WAR II: HOME FRONT

Pupils will learn about life on the Home Front during World War II. Using discussion, objects, documents, photographs and posters they will explore the themes of evacuation, rationing, air raids and propaganda. SOC 2-03a

HITTING THE BOTTLE

This workshop will focus on social attitudes to alcohol in Scotland and encourage young people to explore through objects, drama and discussion, the sorts of decisions that they may have to make in everyday life. HWB 2-16A

SCOTLAND – ONE NATION

This workshop will explore themes of racism, bullying and sectarianism as pupils learn about migration to and from Lanarkshire over the years. The workshop encourages group work and discussion as well as a chance to try some drama. HWB 2-10a

 

STEM: ENGINEERING – SCOTLAND’S INDUSTRIAL PAST
Second Level P5-7 /£44 / 90 mins
Focusing on the great achievements of Lanarkshire engineers pupils will learn about the different types of engineering and the rise and fall of heavy engineering. They will also take part in some hands on team challenges to design, test and build a piece of engineering. TCH0-12a

 

STEM: SCIENCE – FLOATING AND SINKING

Discover the challenges a boat builder faces with these problem-solving science activities. Pupils will explore floating and sinking through practical experiments to discover more about materials and buoyancy. SCN 2-08b

Using traditional toys and games from the museum’s collection and some simple experiments the children will learn about basic forces and motion including push, pull, gravity and friction. SCN0-07a
