Hand Building Alternative Firing & Terra Sigillata Workshop

Hand Building Alternative Firing & Terra Sigillata Workshop

Hand Building Alternative Firing & Terra Sigillata Workshop at Pather Artworks in Wishaw on Friday 22 & 29th September, 6 October & 3 November 2023 from 6pm – 8pm.

Terra Sigillata was used in Roman times to seal and colour pottery and clay work. The recipe is made almost entirely of clay and was born in ancient Greece, hence its name terra sigillata (sealed earth). Today the method is used to obtain a semi-shiny surface for pottery and clay works without using ceramic glaze. Terra sigillata is applied very thinly and leaves a unique finish while perfectly preserving the texture and shape of the final clay work.

Throughout this workshop, you will gain thorough knowledge and insight into hand building and its many applications. You will learn about the transformation from soft clay to finished product and the opportunities for shaping the material within these stages. Sessions will include techniques such as pinch pots, coil building and surface decoration.

You will also get an introduction to terra sigillata and refined slips, which you will use to decorate your final pieces.

Day 1: Making your own terra sigillata and hand building using pinch pots.
Day 2: Pinch pots and coil building.
Day 3: Trimming, finishing and applying terra sigillata.
Day 4: Pieces will be fired prior to this session in preparation for smoke firing. Pots will be cleaned and polished.

All materials and firing included.
