The Summerlee Science Fest returns for 2025!

Join us at Summerlee Museum from Friday 14 February to Wednesday 19 February to explore the world of science!

 

Little Science

We’re having a special Science Fest day just for wee ones, while the big ones are still at school.

Friday 14 February

Learning Room

Bookbug, 1030am

Our regular Friday Bookbug session will have a special science theme – so we’ll be doing lots of counting and songs about animals and machines and a science storybook.

 

NanoJelly, 12pm – 2pm

Students from the University of Strathclyde’s Chemical Engineering outreach team will be at Summerlee for the wobbliest, messiest jelly experience ever. Roll up your sleeves and get your hands in the wibbly-wobbly jelly.

 

Really Small Science

Suitable for all ages

How do we solve the problem of plastic pollution? Discover the world of sustainable plastics by making your own bouncy ball. Test your recycling skills in a match up game and learn all about plastic recycling. Explore how chemical engineering can make new plastics out of seaweed with researchers from the University of Strathclyde.

Each day the Science Festival will welcome a huge array of special guests all with something amazing to show you, or something fun for you to do, and all free of charge.  Each day sees different guests from community organisations, universities and more, here to surprise and inspire you.

 

Glasgow Science Centre: Bodyworks On Tour

Glasgow Science Centre bring a selection of experiments and exhibits all about how our bodies work. Get hands-on with a range of engaging physiology and anatomy-themed exhibits. They explore themes such as cardio-vascular fitness, body composition and the effects of lifestyle choices like smoking. Visit the Fitlab, a pulse-raising, interdisciplinary experience exploring endurance, strength, agility, speed and coordination through a range of zoned exhibits.

Join the Little Lab Investigators crew for Forces Unleashed- this workshop covers the concepts of speed, friction and stopping distances with children experimenting with ramps and cars.

 

Silly Science

Join the Silly Science crew for about of messy bout of messy and explosive science activities.

Activities include:

  • Silly slime spectacular; make and keep your own slimy creations, learning about polymers and how they work, in a fun and creative way!
  • Learn about the world of chemical reactions with some explosive experiments.

Sessions last 30 minutes and are suitable for children (and adults) aged 4 and over.

This is a MESSY activity – so don’t wear your fancy clothes.

Science Festival LIVE!

There’s lots happening at the Science Festival this year and we need you to spread the news about it.  Come to the Photomedia Studio in the Ironworks building where Green Screen technology will put you in a virtual news studio so you can record a short video of you delivering news from the Festival and hot science topics of the day.  Videos will be made available for you to watch later.

 

Think Science Science Show

Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 February

Join ThinkScience for a mind blowing science show, crammed with surprising facts, things to try at home, and things to absolutely not, under any circumstances, try at home. Learn how to weigh your own head and tremble at the deadly bed of nails.

 

Dynamic Earth: Prehistoric Planet

Dinosaurs aren’t the only thing that used to inhabit the earth. Join staff from Dynamic Earth in exploring the other prehistoric creatures that roamed the land, soared in the skies, and swam in the oceans!
