My Local Area (Motherwell)

Early level P1-3 / £38 / 90 mins

By investigating with maps, photos and documents, pupils will learn about their local area now and in the past. Find out how Motherwell got its name, why the town expanded and learn about some of the town’s historical landmarks. SOC 1-02a / SOC 2-02a

 

What’s in the Archives?

Second Level P3-7/£38/ 90 mins

Discover the secrets of an archive; learn about why documents are kept; who makes the decisions and how to care for the past. Pupils will take a tour of the archive repository and take on the role of an archivist to research real life stories of Lanarkshire’s past. SOC 1-03a /SOC 2-01a

 

The Romans

Second Level P4-6 / £38 / 90 mins

Discover more about the Romans in Scotland. Learn about the food they ate, the clothes they wore and the impact of the Roman army on Lanarkshire. Pupils will also have the opportunity to handle full size replica armour and domestic objects and even try on a toga! SOC 2-03a Why not combine with a trip to Strathclyde Park to see the original bath house remains?

 

The Victorians

Second Level P4-6 / £38 / 90mins

What impact did the Industrial Revolution have on Lanarkshire? Using photos, objects and documents from the Victorian period pupils will investigate the coal and iron industries and learn about everyday Victorian life at home, work and school. SOC 2-03a. Scottish Knights and Castles

Second Level P4-6 / £38 / 90 mins

Discover more about medieval Lanarkshire. Pupils will learn about the role of the castle, medieval food and banquets, discuss what a knight did and enjoy some hands on fun with full size replica armour. SOC 2-03a

 

World War II: Home Front

Second Level P5-7 / £38 / 90 mins

Pupils will learn about life on the Home Front during World War II. Using discussion, objects, documents, photographs and posters they will explore the themes of evacuation, rationing, air raids and propaganda. SOC 2-03a

Hitting the Bottle

Second Level P6-7 / £38 / 90 mins

This workshop will focus on social attitudes to alcohol in Scotland and encourage young people to explore through objects, drama and discussion, the sorts of decisions that they may have to make in everyday life. HWB 2-16A

Scotland – One Nation

Second Level P6-7 / £38 / 90 mins

This workshop will explore themes of racism, bullying and sectarianism as pupils learn about migration to and from Lanarkshire over the years. The workshop encourages group work and discussion as well as a chance to try some drama.

Engineering

Second Level P6-7 /£38/ 90 mins

This workshop explores the work of civil, structural, electrical and mechanical engineers focussing on the achievements of Lanarkshire engineers. There is lots of fun, hands-on activity including designing, building structures and making moving objects. TCH 2-12a

Discover the challenges a boat builder faces with these problem-solving science activities. Pupils will explore floating and sinking through practical experiments to discover more about materials and buoyancy. SCN 2-08b

Curriculum for Excellence workshops for primary, early years and secondary classes. All workshops can be adapted to suit the needs of your class – just ask when booking. The maximum class size we can accommodate is 33 pupils

for primary and secondary schools and 15 for nursery.

Workshop Costs

  • £38 for a 90 min primary class of up to 33 pupils
  • £97 a 90 min outreach workshop, delivered twice in yourschool, including travel in North Lanarkshire (contact us for travel costs out with North Lanarkshire).
  • £50 to hire a loan box for a term
  • Self-led visits are free of charge but must be booked on 01236 638352
  • Christmas workshops and other special events have varying charges – ask when booking.
