BookbugBookbug in North Lanarkshire

Bookbug is a Scottish-wide programme build up of three main parts. These are Bookbug sessions, Bookbug packs and Bookbug’s Library Challenge.

The sessions are free song and rhyme sessions led by trained staff members to get the most benefit for you and your little one.

Bookbug packs are gifted to children throughout Scotland when they reach a particular age, ensuring that children everywhere have access to books.

Bookbug’s Library Challenge gives you and your little one the chance to enjoy your local library and be rewarded for doing so. Check out the sections below to find out more.

In-person Bookbug Sessions

Bring your little ones along to the library and enjoy songs, rhymes and stories from our Bookbug Leaders. The sessions give your little ones the chance to socialise with others and learn through play and songs.

Bookings for each session are library specific with some now returning to drop-in sessions. Please check directly with the library before attending to find out if a prior booking is required.

Remember babies are welcome to be fed however and whenever they need in all our libraries, look out for the Breastfeeding Friendly Scotland Award.

The Scottish Book Trust have created a wide variety of Bookbug packs aimed at different age ranges. Click on the pack you are interested in to find out more:

Bookbug Baby Pack

The Bookbug Baby Bag is a great way for you to start sharing books with your child from birth. The brilliant books and goodies in the bag will help start a lifelong love of books and reading. We hope you’ll enjoy sharing the bag at home together.

How Do I Get This Bag for My Baby?

Packs are usually gifted to babies at around 6 – 16 weeks by your health visitor or a member of the Public Health Team at your local health centre.
Usually it will be gifted at your child’s 16 week immunisation or weaning visit.

What Does the Bookbug Baby Pack Include?

Three board books – These brilliant books have been specially selected by a panel of Early Years experts as well as being tested with families. The books are bright, durable and safe for little hands and mouths.
‘Hello Baby’ CD – This CD is packed full of songs and nursery rhymes for you to enjoy with your child. The songs and rhymes can also be heard at your local Bookbug Session.
‘Out and About’ buggy book – This colourful buggy book has lots of things to spot when you are out with your baby and the book can be easily clipped onto your buggy or pram. Produced with Road Safety Scotland.
My First Year with Bookbug – The Bookbug Baby Calendar is a great way for you to chart your baby’s first year, including lots of book recommendations and reading tips from play@home and Ready Steady Baby.
Bookbug alerts sign-up form – Bookbug Alerts let you know when your baby’s next Bookbug Bag is due as well as giving you reading tips and book recommendations on your child’s birthday.
All contents come in a sturdy canvas bag.

Bookbug Toddler Pack

The Bookbug Toddler Bag is a great way to get little ones even more excited about books and reading. Every day is an adventure for a toddler, so don’t worry if they want to run around, jump about and explore the room as you read to them. Even though they are moving, they are still listening to the sound of your voice and enjoying all the wonderful new words!

How Do I Get This Bag for My Toddler?

The Bookbug Toddler pack is gifted to toddlers from the age of 13-24 months by your health visitor or a member of the Public Health Team at your local health centre.
• Usually it will be gifted at your child’s MMR immunisation at 13 months.

What Does the Bookbug Toddler Pack Include?

Three picture books – These beautiful books have been specially selected by a panel of Early Years experts as well as being tested with families. The Bookbug Toddler Bag books have slightly longer stories for you to enjoy sharing together.
Bookbug Toddler Pad – This notepad is perfect for little hands eager to scribble and make their mark on the world!
Bookbug Crayons – This box of 8 chunky crayons in a range of bright colours is perfect for your little artist in the making.
Bookbug Song and Rhyme Book – This booklet is packed full of songs and nursery rhymes for you to enjoy with your child. The songs and rhymes can also be heard at your local Bookbug Session.
Bookbug Height Chart – The Bookbug Toddler Height Chart is beautifully illustrated by Nick Sharratt, and is a lovely way to record how your little one grows. There are also lots of book, song and rhyme recommendations throughout the chart for you to try together.
Bookbug Toddler CD – This fabulous new CD features a mixture of songs, rhymes and instrumental music from a variety of voices and styles.

Bookbug Explorer Pack

The Bookbug Explorer Bag will boost every young adventurer’s love of books and reading, as well as encouraging their writing and drawing.

Your little one will love the sense of discovery and excitement as they dive into longer books. We hope you’ll enjoy cuddling up together to share a new story or enjoy an old favourite.

How Do I Get This Bag for My Little Explorer?

Most children will receive their Bookbug Explorer pack via their early years setting, i.e. local authority and independent nurseries.

What Does the Bookbug Explorer Pack Include?

Three picture books – These beautiful books have been specially selected by a panel of Early Years experts as well as being tested with families.
My Bookbug Explorer Activity Book – This activity book is a great way to encourage children to talk about the books in their Explorer Bag and share their drawings. There are activity pages based on the books and some handy book recommendations.
Bookbug Explorer Pencils – These 6 brightly coloured pencils are ideal for children learning to write.
My Bookbug Explorer CD – This CD is packed full of songs and nursery rhymes for families to enjoy. Many of the songs and rhymes can also be heard at local Bookbug Sessions. You can listen to the tracks online here.
4 large postcards – These postcards are perfect for sending to grandparents, neighbours and friends, with plenty of space for children to write their own personal message.
Parent Leaflet – this includes tips on sharing the books and other items with children.
Bookbug alerts sign up form – Bookbug Alerts let a parent know when their next Bookbug Bag is due as well as giving them reading tips and book recommendations.
All contents come in a sturdy child sized canvas bag with smaller handles. Children will love carrying their books around by themselves!

Bookbug Primary 1 Family Pack

Bookbug will be gifting a Bookbug Primary 1 Family Bag to every P1 child in Scotland. This Bookbug P1 Family Bag is produced by Scottish Book Trust in partnership with Education Scotland and the Scottish Government as part of. Read, Write, Count is a literacy and numeracy campaign aimed at children in P1 to P3.

This Bookbug Bag will help to create a lasting link between reading at school and at home. This bag also allows your child to take part in the The Bookbug Picture Book Prize. They can use the voting slip to vote for their favourite book from the bag, encouraging their love of reading by celebrating their choices.

How Do I Get This Bag for My Baby?

All schools have been encouraged to give the P1 Bag to children during Book Week Scotland.

What Does the Bookbug Primary 1 Family Pack Include?

Three brilliant picture books, all shortlisted for The Bookbug Picture Book Prize
An activity booklet filled with games and activities for you and your child to enjoy.
Colouring pencils to use with the activity book or on their own
A magnetic whiteboard with a set of magnetic numbers, and a whiteboard pen.
A voting slip so your child can choose and vote for their favourite book in The Bookbug Picture Book Prize
All contents come in a sturdy canvas bag.

Gaelic Bookbug Packs

All of the Bookbug Packs are available in a Gaelic format and are full of great ways how to share Gaelic with your little one. Use these fantastic resources to help your child learn Gaelic.

How Do I Get These Packs for My Baby/Toddler?

Gaelic Bookbug Baby and Toddler Bags can be requested from your local Bookbug Co-ordinator or Bòrd na Gàidhlig Early Years Worker.
Primary 1 children in Gaelic Medium Education will receive a Gaelic Bookbug Primary 1 Family Pack during Book Week Scotland.

What Does the Gaelic Bookbug Packs Include?

The Gaelic Bookbug Bags contain Gaelic editions of the three books in the English Bookbug Bags. There is also useful information from Bòrd na Gàidhlig for parents and carers who want to share Gaelic with their children.
The Gaelic P1 Family Bag includes Gaelic editions of the three books nominated for The Bookbug Picture Book Prize and a new dual-language Gaelic/English Activity Booklet developed with support from the Gaelic Books Council.
Please note that you are entitled to both a bag in Gaelic AND a bag in English as some resources in the English bag are not replicated in the Gaelic bag.

Collect a beautiful set of certificates

Bookbug’s Library Challenge is a great way to have fun and get involved with your little ones reading. It is available to any child of Bookbug age (0 – 4 years) and it is completely free to take part. You don’t even need to come to Bookbug sessions, although we would love you to do that too.

How Does the Challenge Work?

It’s really simple:

Join your local library and pick up your child’s Collector’s Card from the counter.
Collect a stamp each time your child borrows books.
When your card is full, swap it for a certificate for your child to keep.
Start collecting stamps again on a new card! There are lots of certificates to collect.
