Bargeddie Primary
Bargeddie Primary School is a non-denominational, co-educational Primary School situated to the East End of Glasgow. The school was established in December 1894 to serve the village community of Bargeddie, near Coatbridge.
In December 2007 we left behind our beautiful sandstone building, which the school had occupied since opening over 100 years ago.
We moved to a new, purpose built Joint Campus with our partner school St. Kevin’s Primary, with whom we have established close links.
In Bargeddie Primary School we strive to deliver a broad and balanced curriculum and pay particular attention to raising achievement as well as attainment.
We have established effective community links with our local associated secondary school Coatbridge High, local Nurseries, our Parent Council and local businesses. There are also strong links with our fellow cluster Primary Schools and Drumpark School for children with Special Educational Needs.
Over the course of the academic year our pupils benefit from many opportunities to participate in activities out with the core curricular areas. These activities are designed to enrich and complement classroom work and therefore play an important role in the life of the school and in the experiences offered to our children.
Regular newsletters are sent to parents to keep them informed of developments and activities within the school. We benefit greatly from the interest, support and cooperation of our parent body, working in partnership with each other to foster in our pupils appropriate attitudes to work and to others. The strength of this partnership is very much appreciated.
Our Parent Council, which was established in session 2007/2008 to replace our previous School Board, work very hard to support the work of the school and organise fundraising events for pupils, parents, friends and members of the general community to participate in.
Each session the parents of our new Primary 1 pupils are invited to visit the school on three occasions in May with their children to allow opportunities for our newest pupils to meet their class teacher and their classmates. Parents have the opportunity to attend workshops about the curriculum their children will experience in Primary 1 and to ask questions about this new event in their child’s life.
During the year appointments are arranged for all parents to visit the school for a variety of purposes in order to share and contribute to the learning experiences of our children.
The school plays an integral role in its community and we regularly participate in competitions, special and sporting events. We like to maintain a positive profile in the community and in the local press.
Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from Bargeddie primary normally transfer to Coatbridge High School.
St Kevin’s Primary
We share a new purpose built joint campus with our partner school Bargeddie primary, with whom we have established close links.
Each school has its own educational wing comprising of teaching bases and pupil entrances, toilets and cloakrooms. We share the central areas of gym hall, dining room, library, noisy quiet room and community rooms on a pro-rata basis. The external environment has a full size synthetic playing field for sports and tarmac play areas. The building and grounds are compatible with the needs of disabled persons having ramps and disabled toilets.
St Kevin’s school provides many opportunities for pupils to engage in activities which support a Curriculum for Excellence. They include educational, cultural and sporting visits, enterprise, health and eco projects. We teach Spanish and offer brass tuition for senior pupils. After school clubs play an important part in the life of the school and netball, football cricket and dance clubs are offered throughout the year.
We have a very strong supportive Parent’s Council who aid the work of the school and organise events for pupils and the wider community of Bargeddie.
St Kevin’s issues newsletters to parents monthly to keep them informed of the developments and initiatives happening in the school. Parents evening are arranged twice a year, where parents are offered a choice of suitable appointments in which they can view the school and chat confidentially with their child’s teacher. Parents are always welcome to contact the school at any time to discuss any issues relating to their children’s education.
