The History of Summerlee Museum

A Visit Scotland ‘4-star’ rated visitor attraction, we had a £10 million redevelopment in miners2008 including £5m from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

In 2012 we invested £100,000, including £80,000 from Museums Galleries Scotland, in a new covered display area (Summerlee Engineering Pavilion) for our key items of large engineering equipment.

The main exhibition hall, created in the late 1980’s from the former Hydrocon Crane works, now provides an excellent space for the museum’s displays and working machinery, including a huge winding engine from the former Cardowan Colliery.
