Here are some great finds from our Open Learning Officer, Evelyn.


This free app is a bird guide to identify birds. Its a great way to learn how to identify a bird by either taking a photo of the bird you see in your garden or when you are out walking and upload it on Merlin. It will identify the bird or create a list of possible matches. You can also search by size of bird, colour, location etc. This app was developed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. It is a entertaining and educational at the same time. Cornell Lab of Ornithology also have an online guide to birds and bird watching online at


This is a plant identification app which helps identify flowers, plants and trees. You can snap a photo of a leaf of a plant/flower/tree and upload it to Leafsnap and it will assist you in making a positive ID. You can also read more detailed information about the leaf you have uploaded.

BBC Good Food

Discover home cooking that everyone can enjoy. Recipes include breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks. You can also download the BBC Good Food app to your smartphone for free. There are lots of delicious recipes that you can enjoy.


This is a treasure trove of jigsaw puzzles in numerous categories e.g. animals, art, flowers, holidays, nature scenes, ocean life, sport, transport, travel and more. The jigsaws vary in size and difficulty and how long they take to complete. Plus you can upload your own photograph and have it cut into a puzzle. Jigzone can be so much fun and it can become quite a good family fun activity.

NHS Fitness Studio – Pilates

The pilates work out is created by InstructorLive and concentrates on posture, balance, strength and flexibility. It also focuses on the mind-body connection. While doing the various exercises your mind needs to be constantly aware of your breathing and the way your body moves. It is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. Access to this work out is currently free through the NHS website. You feel like you’ve had a good work out afterwards. It is a very enjoyable session and a great lockdown alternative.
